Am wondering if they are any good as HTPCs anymore because they are only using Intel graphics chips now What I wanted to do with the mini is pretty basic - I have 3x 3TB External USB 3.0 HDs that I was going to plug in to the mini to view content on my TV and to use Plex to stream.

Any issues make sure to browse the forums or ask specific questions. A few people I know suggested Mac Minis running Plex. Good luck and when you setup your Mac mini and PMS and network make sure to give your Mac a static IP address and configure all of your remote network settings for plex manually and set up port forwarding in your router. I am looking to upgrade my server to a newer mini like the one you have purchased and curious to see if it all works out for you. My Mac sits headless hard wired to my asus Ac68r router and local clients in the house consists of 3 ROKU 3’s and and Apple TV 4 which in my opinion has the best looking Plex interface. My internet speeds are 150 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Just get the Plex app for your Apple TVor iPad.

All of my movies are in Mkv x264 1080p and shows range from 480 to 720 mkv x264 and everything seems to play just fine. The Mac mini is a low-power, quiet device, which you could put just about anywhere in your home, as long as it has access to your Wi-Fi network. Internet speeds and bandwidth will play a big role in your satisfaction especially if all your media is of higher bitrates. Besides plex the only other apps I run on Mini is iTunes and photos so I can integrate it with my plex library.

the ATV4K does a surprisingly good job as a plex client but it can’t bitstream audio and the Mac mini should be able to also with the ability to playback high res audio natively. The biggest software requirement for an older Mac to become a Plex media server is that it has to run Mac OS 10.8 or. So far the ATV4K with Plex has been good and I anticipate the Mac mini will be better. The Mac should be able to handle all of your transcoding and server needs. I have the new Mac mini ordered and I’m rebuilding my plex library. It is able to handle up to 6 streams of mixed iPhone android and other clients such as rokus and Apple TVS. As far as the mini being my server I have a plex pass and about 15 members of my family and friends in my Plex Home. Only issue I’m running into is running out of ports and storage space. It’s on current version of Mac OS sierra and current version of PMS 1.3.0 and my setup consists of 12tb of WD mybook externals. I’ve been running my plex media server off my 2010 Mac mini server intel core 2 duo and have had no issues for the last 4 years.
